Memorial Day Weekend 2016 – A Salute to Our Korean War Veterans

 Event and Registration Information

The Veterans Plaza of Northern Colorado will be honoring our Korean War Veterans during its annual Memorial Day Weekend celebration in 2016. The Veterans Plaza’s mission is to honor our military members for their service and sacrifices, and to educate the public of such. Annually the Plaza hosts a celebration of our men and women in uniform during the Memorial Day Weekend. This year will be no different as we pay tribute to those who served in the Korean War, 1950 – 1953.

The Korean War has often been referred to as “The Forgotten War.” Lasting three years and following close on the heels of World War Two, the war claimed the lives of 36,516 and wounding of 92,134 American service members. It is our mission this year to make sure all are remembered.

There are several events over a three day period that comprise our Salute to Our Korean War Veterans. They begin on Saturday the 28th of May and run through Memorial Day, May 30th.

On the morning of Saturday the 28th, we will be placing 3,600 American flags, 1 for every 10 KIA, at the Veterans Plaza. In the past this ceremony has proved an emotional and inspirational experience for those who participate and those who visit to view the sea of red, white and blue. The Veterans Plaza information and tour guide team will be in place to answer questions and guide visitors through the Plaza and explain all the intricacies of this magnificent honorarium.

Saturday evening is when things really pick up. We are going to host a 1950’s USO dinner/dance complete with a Marilyn Monroe tribute and Just for Kicks Big band at the Marriott in Fort Collins. It is our intent to have at least 100 Korean War Veterans as our guests to this complimentary evening of dining and fond memories. We are only limited by the number of tables we have sponsored, so this number may increase. Korean War Veteran guests or guests of the Plaza may attend at the admittance of $45 per head.

Veterans and their guests must register to attend the dinner/dance (5:00 pm – 11:00 pm) here Click here to register yourself and your guests for the dinner/dance.

General public wishing to attend the dance (8:00 pm – 11:00 pm) must purchase tickets here or for $25 at the door Tickets for general public for dance.

Our guest speaker will be the newly appointed Republic of Korea Consul and Mr. James McGibney, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea. The private dinner and dance for vets, their guests, and major donors will begin at 5:00 PM and go until 8:00 PM when the doors will be open to the public to meet our heroes and enjoy the sounds and swings of the 1950’s. The highlight of the dinner/dance will be the awarding of the Korean Ambassador for Freedom Medal and certificate to our Korean War Veterans in attendance. This will commence at 6:30 PM in one of the ballrooms with a photographer on hand to capture the moment.

Our official ceremony is on Sunday the 29th. Beginning at 9:00 AM visitors will be able to visit the Plaza and view the many displays set up by veteran oriented organizations.   At 12:30 PM we will have our Marilyn Monroe tribute perform as warmup for the ceremony which begins at 1:00 PM.

The formal ceremony will consist of raising of the colors, a prayer, our guest speakers, inspirational observances, a 21 gun salute, taps, and a flyover by a squadron of Air Force Huey helicopters.

The highlight of the official ceremony will be paying tribute to our Korean War Veterans by the Korean Consul and Mr. James McGibney, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea, in the awarding the Ambassador for Peace Medal and Certificate to all of the Korean War Veterans we have identified and in attendance. This recognition will go a long way in assuring our Korean War Veterans that truly, they are not forgotten.

Monday, Memorial Day, is a day of solitude at the Veterans Plaza. The plaza opens at 7:00 AM and remain open until 11:00 PM. At 3:00 PM there will be a short ceremony that will consist of a prayer, taps, and a 21 gun salute.
